JUSTIN’S HONDA CRX

OWNER'S RIDE

Well in life, there are people who own cars, and then there are the real cars owners. From the onset, Justin’s passion for driving, owning and working on his car can be immediately felt just by speaking with and listening to him. Here he shares with us his journey and passion for his CRX.

PASSION PROJECT | JUSTIN’S HONDA CRX

Justin chose the POTENZA Adrenalin RE004, Bridgestone’s street performance tyre, in the tyre size of 195/55 R15 for his 1991 Honda CRX.

Back in the 90s’ the Honda CRX was the most popular sports car for the common enthusiasts, much like how the Volkswagen Scirocco is now.

Built around a simple philosophy of a lightweight, short-wheel based hatchback that was easy to handle and fun to drive, most units sold here were powered by a 1.6-litre engine that pushed out an adequate 130 bhp. Later units were known to have the early generation VTEC power unit (B16A) that had 160 bhp, an engine that was later used in the equally popular Civic VTi (EG).

Hi Justin, please share with our readers what you do for a living?

I'm working for a bank now, nothing too exciting but nice and technical. I work with data a lot and solve people's problems by answering their data needs.

Cool, so how long have you had your CRX for and what do you like about it?

Not too long actually, I’m coming up on a year of CRX ownership now! As a pretty hands-on person, I love the fact that it allows me to tinker with it and that inevitably builds a bond between the car and myself.

Any memorable moments?

Probably breaking down for the first time (laughs). The alternator just failed when I was out one night, and it was 3am! Looking back, I think it was funnier than it was annoying. That experience really set me up mentally for what fixing up a classic car was going to be like.

What was your car ownership journey like before the CRX?

Well, this black beauty is actually my first car. But I have driven a fairly large variety of enthusiast cars because my friends and family are all car nuts.

Just before the CRX, I used to drive the family’s Suzuki Swift Sport (ZC33S). We have a thing for hatchbacks. The Swift Sport replaced a Volkswagen Golf R32 as the small family runabout hatch.

What's on your list of dream cars?

Hmm… maybe a fully restored CRX (laughs)? I’m really working on getting it there, and so that’s the short term goal.

I think in the long term, something just as mechanical but even more so. Perhaps an Alfa Romeo Giulia Type 105 or an air-cooled Porsche? Really, anything with dual webers would be nice, perhaps another Honda but with carbs?

Last question on your tyres, so RE004 - yay or nay?

Definitely “yay”!

Like I’ve mentioned in the video interview, POTENZA Adrenalin RE004 is not only a great performer all round, but it even helps with the car’s fuel efficiency. Really a bang-for-buck tyre if you’re looking for something that can do it all for not a lot of money.
